The following just sent to my Senators:
-
The range of attacks on public health contained in the GOP reconciliation bill is truly astonishing - but there is one of which I want to make particular note.
The bill originally proposed to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth on Medicaid and the health care exchanges under the Affordable Care Act. That is heinous enough, but at the last minute, it was made even worse, making it apply at all ages and so much for it being about "OMG SAVE THE CHILDREN!"
Of course we knew that all along, knew that the goal of the bozos, bigots, and buffoons in GOPper leadership, abetted by whatever fraction of craven cowards more concerned with CYA than GAC exist among them, is to wipe transgender people from law and then entirely from legal and social existence, to sentence them to the equivalent of an oubliette, a medieval prison cell where people were stuffed and then - forgotten, as if they never existed.
The original version was already scientifically, ethical, and morally reprehensible. This one is utterly unconscionable.
I urge you to sponsor (or co-sponsor if there already is one) an amendment to undo not only the manager's amendment but the entire section.
It has been said recently there are “moral moments” where the question comes down to right and wrong. This is one. Be right.
And let it be made clear: I am a 76-year-old, straight cis male. By every measure I should be expected to be on the side of the haters. I am not.
